Sitting with my mom last night, talking about life in general, I wanted to share something with her that was deeply personal. I had just received printed copies of my book in the mail and I was so excited and nervous at the same time, because “my story” in the book I had not shared with her. I wasn’t sure how she would react or what she would say, but in that moment – I was lead to give her a copy and say “Mom, I am excited to give you my first printed copy of the book that I’m so very proud to be a part of. Please read my story when you get a chance. I know that I’ve never shared with you what happened in my life, but today I want you to know.”
She was so excited to put her hands on the book. Her eyes started to tear up and she said to me, “You know I have always been so proud of you and all your accomplishments. You can do anything you set your mind on doing. I’ve never had the strength nor the confidence that you have. I don’t know anyone as inspiring as you are!”
Wow- Can you ask for anything better than that? I love her so much! I left her to read my story. I came back to check on her every few minutes. I was anxious to hear what she thought. I could tell by her facial expressions during some parts that she was angry and when her face smiled I could tell she was at the good parts. I wonder if my body language changes when I’m reading a book. (smile)
When she was done reading, she grabbed my hand and said – “I never knew you went through all of that. I can understand why you didn’t want me as your mom to know, but you really should have told me. I was always here to help you.” She looked down at the books cover and began to cry. She said “This is exactly what you need to be doing. You need to be a writer. The minute I started reading I didn’t want to stop. What you wrote flowed so beautifully. You are a gifted writer and this is what you should be doing with your life!”
AWESOME – ELATED – OVERJOYED – AMAZING – YIPPIE – WOOHOO!
Of course we talked about my story and a few other things, but what she said in that moment was simply the best thing I could have ever received from her. She is the best.
